Vikas Gowda in good form

NEW DELHI: Vikas Gowda was in good form last Saturday, winning the discus title at the Oklahoma State University Invitation meet at Norman, US, with a throw of 63.22 metres.

Gowda, making a return to competition this season after having missed the entire 2009 season due to an injury, was competing in his first ‘official meet' of the season.

The 26-year-old Indian record (64.96) holder had achieved a 60.51m at Tempe, Arizona, on March 20 in what was some sort of a warm-up competition after his long lay-off. His latest mark puts Gowda at 16th in the year's lists headed by Olympic champion Gerd Kanter (71.45m) of Estonia.

Significantly, the list contains only one other Commonwealth athlete above Gowda, Australian Benn Harradine (64.01). Another Australian, 18-year-old Julian Wruck, has thrown 61.02m this season.

Gowda finished sixth in the last Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, with a throw of 60.08m.
