‘Women unsafe under BJP regime'

Bangalore: The Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress President Manjula Naidu, the former chairperson of the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation Kamalamma and the former BMP councillor Lakshmi Devi on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party for failing to protect women against attacks and sexual misconduct by party leaders holding high positions in government.

Speaking to presspersons, they alleged that there seemed to be a pattern among ruling party leaders to deny protection to women. They named Minister for Excise M.P. Renukacharya and Chief Minister's Political Secretary B.J. Puttaswamy in this connection.

‘Drama'

The recent case, they said was that of the former Food and Civil Supplies Minister H. Halappa, who was allowed to disappear after his alleged sexual misconduct. The Criminal Investigation Department enacted a drama of arresting him after dillydallying for a week and sent him to hospital immediately. The delay, they alleged was to help him make preparations to obtain anticipatory bail and that was why the Congress demanded that the probe be entrusted to the CBI.

Other cases

Ms. Naidu and Ms. Kamalamma also alleged that the Government had failed to unearth the truth behind the mysterious death of Padmapriya, wife of BJP MLA M. Raghupati Bhat, and the wife of a prominent BJP politician in Shimoga district two years ago. The former Bellary municipality president Padmavati Yadav was murdered some months ago and no one had been arrested, they alleged.
