DEHRA DUN:Police claim to have busted a gang selling banned Schedule ‘H' drugs to school children with the arrest of Chanchal Chetri from Nanda Ki Chowki area near here. A huge cache of about 700 sedative injections was recovered and efforts are under way now to nab his accomplices spread across the Bareilly region of Uttar Pradesh. Drug abuse Deputy Superintendent of Police Abhay Singh alleged here on Tuesday that the accused was selling nearly 100 injections per day to children of private schools and young students of vocational institutions in the city. Expressing grave concern over the drug abuse, Uttarakhand Provincial Medical and Health Services general secretary Dr. Durga Prasad Joshi demanded stern punishment for the peddlers but at the same time asked parents and schools to be careful as children in the 12-17 age group were the worst victims. Harmful These drugs lead to dependency, then intolerance that requires higher doses of drugs that adversely affect the liver and the kidneys. The child might fall into depression if the drug is not available and may take to petty thefts and in extreme cases even commit suicide, Dr. Joshi cautioned.
