CHENNAI: The number of documents registered in the State declined marginally in 2009-10 by just over 3.5 per cent and revenue realised declined by 6.86 per cent. This is the second straight year when revenue from land registration has declined. Suresh Rajan, Minister for Tourism and Registration, informed the Assembly on Tuesday that the number of documents registered in the State was 27,39,026 in 2009-10. It was 28,32,686 in 2008-09. Revenue collected in 2008-09 was Rs.4,099.54 crore and in 2009-10 it was Rs.3,818.25 crore. The revenue realised in 2009-10 was lesser than that of 2007-08 – it was Rs.4,232.36 crore that year. The year the DMK was elected to power, 2006, the percentage of revenue realised was a jump of 45.08 (in 2006-07) over the previous year (Rs.2,348.64 crore; 2005-06). “But, there are signs of revival in the last few months, as reflected by the trends in collection,” he said. In the past four years the department has collected Rs.15,557.65 crore as revenue. As many as 1.7 crore documents had been registered and 3.5 crore people utilised the services of the department. Computerisation The Minister said computerisation of all 574 sub-registrar offices in the State had been completed. Because of the closure of 40 sub-registrar offices during the AIADMK regime, people were put to serious difficulties. The DMK government had decided to open all the offices in a phased manner. Also, in the past four years, the government had constructed permanent offices for 40 sub-registrars at a cost of Rs.7.25 crore. Another five were being constructed. Mr. Suresh Rajan said that in some places people had come forward to donate land for construction of sub-registrar offices. As a new initiative, the government decided to construct an office at Annur (in Coimbatore district) on 11 cents donated by a person. People had constructed 50 per cent of the building and the government would contribute Rs.35 lakh for finishing the remaining part. In Tiruchi district the office of the sub-registrar in K. Sathanur was fully constructed by the local people on 18 cents donated by a person.
