Project for the livelihood of fisherfolk

Tuticorin: With a view to promote sustainable livelihood for the fisherfolk, the Fisheries Department is working out strategies under the banner of Fisheries Management for Sustainable Livelihood (FIMSUL) to implement a long term policy framework to ascertain the requirements of the fisher folk.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation would be the implementing agency in association with Department of Fisheries from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, C.M. Muralidharan, National Project Coordinator, FIMSUL, Chennai told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

The experts at national and international level would extend cooperation and step up their involvement in implementing the project, he added.The eighteen month project for the implementation of the long term policy frame work commenced in April, 2010, he added.

The project would lay emphasis on conducting a series of stakeholder consultations, studies, training and workshops for the fisherfolk and officials from the Department of Fisheries and representatives from voluntary organisations, he said.
