KOCHI: Football buffs the world over may be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the FIFA World Cup but a majority of fans in Kerala are likely to miss the action next month. Leading sports broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports has switched off the signals of ESPN, STAR Sports and STAR Cricket for Asianet Cable Services due to long-pending outstandings and other issues. “We are not anywhere close to settling the issue which means that many in Kerala are likely to miss the FIFA World Cup,” said Unni Krishnan, the Associate Director, Affiliate Sales of ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd, here on Thursday. “Kerala, historically, has been a sports loving city with soccer and cricket topping the popularity charts. It is a sad state of affairs that sports fans are already missing the ICC World Twenty20 and the FIFA World Cup might also be missed,” said Unni Krishnan. “Our local office has been inundated with calls from sports enthusiasts. It is our objective to be seen across every household in Kerala. We want to inform these fans that ESPN STAR Sports and STAR Cricket channels are available on all DTH platforms and also with some independent cable service providers across the State,” he added. The month-long FIFA World Cup, which begins on June 11 in South Africa, will be telecast on ESPN STAR Sports. — Principal Correspondent
