PDS rice seized; one arrested

Tirupur: The police seized 4.9 tonnes of rice allegedly smuggled out of the Public Distribution System (PDS), at Alangiyam, near here, on Wednesday evening.
A mini lorry used for transporting the rice was seized.
Police said A. Karunanidhi (49), who was travelling in the lorry, was arrested. However, the lorry driver escaped.
Police officials said special teams had been constituted to nab the two salesmen of fair price shops situated near Alangiyam for helping the smugglers to get the rice illegally out of the PDS.
Youth held
The police seized 165 pirated DVDs of latest Tamil films at Anupparpalayam near here on Wednesday night.
A 23-year-old youth, who allegedly possessed the DVDs, was arrested.
Of the DVDs, 42 had pornographic footage in it, police said.
Cases registered
The Tirupur North police have registered cases against secretaries of two private schools for erecting flex boards advertising the institutions in public places without permission.
Police said the gigantic flex boards were found near Pushpa theatre bus stop disfiguring the public space and hence, filed cases against Raghuraman and Nagaraj.
