BANGALORE: Local lad S. Chikkarangappa sizzled as India occupied the second spot on day one of the 31 {+s} {+t} HP Asia-Pacific junior golf championship at the Eagleton Golf Resort on Thursday. Thailand was on top with one-over 217, three ahead of India. Chikkarangappa shot the best round — a six-under 66 — but Ashbeer Saini's 73 and Manu Gandas' 81 pulled India back with a total of four-over 220. Chinese Taipei was a stroke behind as the top three opened up a sizable lead over the rest of the teams. In the girls' team event, Chinese Taipei held a slender advantage over Singapore with a total of one-under 143. India was placed third, six shots behind. In the individual category, Chikka opened up a two-stroke lead over Thailand's Poom Saksansin. Starting from the 10th, Chikkarangappa made three straight pars before his first birdie of the day came on the 13th. The 16-year-old went on to add three more birdies before he made the turn. A fruitful return journey saw him finish with the best card of the day. Among the girls, it was Singapore's Joe-Ee Kok who was on top with a par 72, one shot clear of Chinese Taipei's Wei-Ling Hsu. The best-placed Indian is Shreya Ghei, who was tied for fifth place at two-over 74. Chinese Taipei's Sung-I Yu held the lead in Category B (13-14) with a two-over 74. The leading Indian in this category is Shubhankar Sharma, who was tied for the third spot at five-over 77. Princess Mary Superal, who returned with a card of one-over 73, is the leader in the girls' section. Piyush in the van Piyush Sangwan, entering this tournament on the back of good showings on the local tour, took pole position in Category C after carding a par 72, three in front of Thailand's Pawat Kongkanjana. Benyapa Niphatsophon, at three-over 75, is the leader in the girls' section in this age group. The scores: Team event: Boys: Thailand 217, India 220, Chinese Taipei 221, Philippines 232 and Hong Kong 246; Girls: Chinese Taipei 143, Singapore 144, India 149, Thailand 150 and Malaysia 156. Individual event: Categories A & B: Boys: S. Chikkarangappa (Ind) 66, Poom Saksansin (Tha) 68, Teng Kao (Taipei) 69 and Wei-Hou Liu (Taipei) 70; Girls: Jo-Ee Kok (Sin) 70, Wei-Ling Hsu (Taipei) 71, Hsuan-Yu Yao (Taipei) 72, Princess Mary Superal (Phil) 73, Shreya Ghei (Ind) and Joey Poh (Sin) 74. Category B: Boys: Sung-I Yu (Taipei) 74, Nattawat Suvajanakorn (Tha) 75 and Shubhankar Sharma (India) 76; Girls: Princess Mary Superal (Phi) 74, Pinrath Loomboonruang (Tha) 75 and Mimi Ho (HK) 76. Category C: Boys: Piyush Sangwan (Ind) 72, Pawat Kongkanjana (Tha) 75 and Viraj Madappa (Ind) 76. Category D: Boys: Puwit Anupansuebsai (Tha) 71, Karandeep Kochar (India) 82 and Kshitij Kaul (Ind) 84 .
