English topper wants to become civil servant

Staff Reporter

M. Venkatesh

Vellore: M. Venkatesh, State topper in English, in higher secondary exams, wants to do B.E. (ECE) but his ultimate aim is to become an IAS officer.

A student of Sunbeam Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Katpadi, Venkatesh secured 196 in English and obtained a total of 1140 marks. Son of C. Murugan, an employee of a two wheeler company, and Sakunthala, he developed interest in English in Standard IX when he was studying in Krupanandha Vaariyar Higher Secondary School.

“My English teacher in 9 {+t} {+h} standard Mr. Kanagaraj used to show us how grammar works in each lesson. That helped me gain strength in English subject. I expected State rank in English in SSLC. But due to a small mistake I missed the opportunity then. But this time I never expected that I would become topper,” Venkatesh told TheHindu.

“At Sunbeam school, our correspondent Harigopal taught us English in eleventh standard. His different style of teaching helped me grasp English well. He would sound as if he is a lecturer. Though I had books and a handful of notes I utilised them only to refer. But when it comes to replying questions my answers were always in my own language. I spent more time reading news papers than reading my English text books,” Venkatesh said.

When asked why should he chose engineering while his aim is to become civil servant, he said “First I want to support my family. After completing engineering and getting a good job I would prepare for civil services,” he said.
