Three die in Kyrgyz violence

MOSCOW: At least three people died and dozens were wounded in violence in Kyrgyzstan as supporters of the ousted President clashed with their opponents.

Armed clashes in southern Kyrgyzstan, the stronghold of exiled President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, erupted on Friday as thousands of supporters of the interim government tried to regain control of government offices and airports seized by Bakiyev loyalists in three southern cities on Thursday.

Russian television said three people were killed and 63 injured in gunfire fighting in Jalalabad, Mr. Bakiyev's home town.

Mr. Bakiyev had fled Kyrgyzstan last month following a violent uprising against his rule that claimed almost 80 lives.

Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday appointed the former Interior Minister, Mikhail Rushailo, as his personal envoy to violence-hit Kyrgyzstan.

On Friday, Mr. Rushailo flew to the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek.
