Scribes, police ‘confrontation' ends on a happy note

Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA: What was considered a “confrontation” between presspersons and the police over the issuance of notices to a reporter and an associate editor of a Kannada daily ended happily, following assurances from the police that they would not pursue the matter.

It may be recalled that journalists across the State had protested against the notices issued to staff reporter Rahul Belegali and associate editor of Prajavani Padmaraj Dandavati, threatening legal action if details about an interview with a naxal leader published in the paper were not furnished.

The management of the paper reportedly took the matter to the Editors' Guild of India, which saw it as an attempt to curb the freedom of press.

The Karnataka Working Journalists' Association asked its members to stage demonstrations in this regard.

Accordingly, members of the Shimoga District Working Journalists' Association took out a procession recently.

In response, Superintendent of Police S. Murugan convened a meeting of members of the association here on Saturday, in a bid to resolve the issue.

The intention behind the notices served was not to show disrespect to journalists nor belittle the freedom of press, but only an attempt to extract more details about the naxal leader interviewd, Mr. Murugan said.

He asked the journalists not to continue their protest in view of his assurance that the matter would not be pursued.
