Ex-minister, others taken into preventive custody

Charged with defying prohibitory orders

CUTTACK: Former State minister Samir Dey and former Cuttack mayor Nibedita Pradhan along with at least 50 other BJP activists were taken under preventive custody by the city police here on Sunday for defying prohibitory orders promulgated under the Section 144 of CrPC.

The BJP leaders were trying to organise a blood donation camp on the auspicious occasion of Akhshaya Tritiya inside the premises of a half-constructed temple located on the bank of the river Kathjodi near Abhinav Bidanasi which was earlier declared a prohibitory area. Blood donation planned

But Dey and his supporters under the banner ‘Bharat Mata Pujan Committee' on Saturday obtained permission from the local police to organise a blood donation camp and a felicitation meeting near the temple on Sunday.

Accordingly, BJP activists cleaned up the area and erected temporary structures for blood donation camp and meeting. However, the local police on Sunday morning intercepted the BJP activists while they were going in a rally to conduct the camp saying the entire area near the temple was declared out-of-bound for the prohibitory orders have been extended to the nearby areas.

Enraged over the local administration's vindictive attitude, Dey and his supporters defied the orders and entered into the prohibitory area.
