Tirupur: The district police are all set to computerise the road accident history in an attempt to bring down the number of fatal accidents taking place in the district. “A reliable road accident database and analysis system in place will help us to come out with safety improvement mechanisms needed to reduce the accidents as far as possible,” Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) P. Sundaravadivel told The Hindu. Deaths As many as 721 persons were killed in road accidents in the district last year. This year, 267 people had been killed till May 15. Besides, there had been a total of 17 non-fatal accidents between January 1 and May 15 which saw five or more persons severely injured. The computerisation of data would revolve around four basic elements of database assembling namely accident reporting system, accident recording system, analysis of accidents and dissemination of data. Hot spots All the ‘hot spots' and ‘black spots' along with sketches of vulnerable road stretches would also be incorporated into the data base so as to design appropriate safety remedial action. “The entire data obtained will be linked to the Road Accident Data Management System, a web-enabled Geographic Information System, positioned at Chennai,” Mr. Sundaravadivel said. Apart from the three Es- education, enforcement and engineering considered as important parameters for road safety improvement, the district police plans to go a few steps ahead to include evaluation and encouragement in the list. Awareness drive Assessing the causes for accidents from the data base, the road users would be accordingly encouraged by the police to make necessary correction in their driving skills through awareness programmes so as to bring down the chances of them getting involved in accidents.
