Reactor in Hyderabad factory explodes

HYDERABAD: Four employees of a chemical factory were charred to death while four more suffered burns, three of them critically, following explosion of a reactor here at Jeedimetla Industrial Area on Sunday morning.

Police and Fire Service personnel had to battle for over two hours using 10 fire tenders to douse the flames which posed a threat to the adjacent industrial units. There were 16 workers on morning shift at Durga Intermediates when the reactor on the first floor exploded around 7.30 a.m.

Loud explosion

“I was going to bring some material few feet away from the reactor when I heard the loud explosion,” said a worker, G. Rakesh, who lost his elder brother, Raju, working as helper, in the blast. He tried to rescue his brother but could not enter because of the huge flames emanating from the reactor.

Along with Raju (21), three others — Narasimha (25), Swamy (35) and Ramana (35) — were burnt alive. Retrieving the bodies too became a tough task as one of them was trapped underneath a heavy cylinder that fell from the top after the explosion.

The condition of Sri Ramulu (26), Rambabu (35) and Venkateswar Reddy (50), who suffered over 50 per cent burns, was critical while eight other workers escaped unhurt.
