Gopi Chand to start academy in Gwalior

HYDERABAD: Former All England champion and now India's chief National coach Pullela Gopi Chand will start a full-fledged badminton Academy in Gwalior in coordination with the Madhya Pradesh State Government as he signed up with the latter as the “knowledge partner.”

Gopi told The Hindu on Monday that the indoor stadium under construction in Gwalior was to originally have six courts but the plan was modified later to have two air-conditioned courts. “The MP Government is extending complete support to the entire project and I am really pleased with the way it is responding to every need,” Gopi said.

“The focus in the proposed Academy will be more on tribal children in the age group of eight to 12 years who seem to have a very strong body and the resolve. “I will be going around Gwalior, Jabalpur, Indore and Bhopal to scout talent over the next four days,” Gopi said.

“Till the stadium is completed the training programme will continue at Laxmibhai National Institute of Physical Education,” he said.

Simhachalam advances

Seasoned campaigner, K. Simhachalam of South Central Railway, scored a 55-14, 54-26, 58-38 win over Zaki of Cosmos Club in a snooker premilimary round of the FMC State Open snooker and billiards championship at the FMC here on Monday.

Srivatsa in final

R. Srivatsa defeated K. Sathyadeep 8-4 in the boys' under-10 semifinal of the AP State mini and sub-junior tennis tournament for boys and girls organised by GK's Trapeze Tennis Academy at Sainikpuri here.

The results (semifinals): Boys: Under-17: V. Sudhanshu bt K. Santosh 8-6; J. Ikeh bt D. Nyruth 8-5. Under-10: R. Srivatsa bt K. Sathyadeep 8-4; D. Nyruth bt Prahil Jain 8-2.

Girls: Under-12: B. Rithika bt K.S.S. Shivani 8-0; Shravya Shivani bt Sai Nikhita 8-7 (7-3).

Vamshi wins

N. Surya Vamshi of Indira Park and Shradha of Kukatpally won the boys and girls singles tennis titles of the GHMC summer sports meet here on Monday.

Vamshi defeated his teammate S. Raghavendra 6-2 in the boys final while Shradha got the better of Alankrita of Indira Park 6-2 in the other final.

Summer road races

Athletics Coaching Academy of Hyderabad, in association with the Hyderabad District Athletics Association, will organise the 13th AP summer road run on May 23 from 6.00 a.m. for men and women (four km), women and girls under-16 (four km), boys and girls under-13 and 10 years (1.5 km) and veterans (1.5 km).
