KOLKATA: East Bengal juniors avenged the loss of their seniors beating traditional rival Mohun Bagan 2-0 to top the preliminary stage (East Zone) of the under-19 tournament for the I-League playing clubs here on Monday. The result not withstanding both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, which finished second, qualified for the all-India final leg that will have the top two sides of the other preliminary groupings. East Bengal juniors dominated Mohun Bagan for a well-earned win. Pankaj Moula struck twice, in 8th and 19th minutes, to ensure East Bengal's win. The win helped East Bengal maintain an all-win record to tally nine points from three matches while Mohun Bagan finished second with six points. In another match Chirag United SC held Shillong Lajong FC to a goalless draw. The two teams finished their campaign with one point apiece. In the final round, which will be played here from May 23 to 28, Mohun Bagan has been grouped alongside Sporting Clube de Goa (topper of the Goa group) and JCT Mills (runner-up of Phagwara group) in group A. East Bengal is clubbed with Dempo SC (runner-up of Goa group) and Pune FC (winner of Phagwara group) in group B. Toppers of each group will play for the title on May 30. — Principal Correspondent
