PALAKKAD: The Revenue Department has completed the registration work of 430.53 acres of land for the proposed railway coach factory at Kanjikode. The government bought 99 acres through direct negotiations and paid Rs.10.33 crore to landowners. The land was registered in the name of Transport Secretary of the State government. The 430.53 acres include the 235 acres of unused land that was taken back from Instrumentations Limited from 550 acres given to it in 1964 by the State government. When Railways asked for 1,000 acres at Kanjikode, there were problems in acquiring land and an action committee formed against it stopped the officials from surveying the area. Huge estimate The compensation that was required to acquire 1,000 acre was estimated at Rs.150 crore. Besides, many families had to be evicted. Understanding the problem of getting large tracts of land in Kerala, Railways slashed their demand to 425 acres. Thus, the alternative land with the government and the acquisition of 99 acres without any human settlements helped to solve the problem. The Revenue officials here said that with the completion of registration procedures, the 430.53 acres of land is ready for the proposed coach factory. The acquisition and registration work of the land was supervised by a team of Revenue officials, headed by Deputy Collector S. Ramadevi and Tehsildar U. Narayanankutty, with directions from District Collector K.V. Mohan Kumar.
