National status for Polavaram project demanded

Special Correspondent

Linking of Godavari and Krishna rivers will benefit Krishna delta

Chiranjeevi lashes out at KCR

Asks State to provide remunerative price to tobacco

CHIRALA: Praja Rajyam Party chief, Chiranjeevi, has demanded the Central government to accord national status to Polavaram and also Pranahita and Chevella projects, provide funds and complete them at an early date.

Addressing a public meeting here on Tuesday as part of his bus yatra in Prakasam district demanding national project status for Polavaram, Mr. Chiranjeevi said that linking of Godavari and Krishna rivers would immensely benefit century old Krishna delta. He said farmers under Kommamur canal can raise two crops in Prakasam district.

He came down heavily on the TRS chief, K. Chandrasekhara Rao, for advising him not to tour in Telangana districts. Saying that everybody has a right to go anywhere in the country, Mr. Chiranjeevi said that he would welcome Mr. Chandrasekhara Rao to Vijayawada.

He pooh poohed the State government for organising farmers meetings to create awareness among them. He said farmers have enough awareness on agriculture and it is the government that needs awareness on their problems. He demanded the government to take steps to provide remunerative price for tobacco, red gram, cotton and subabul crops.

Referring to the loan waiver scheme for handloom weavers, Mr. Chiranjeevi said that it did not render any benefit to the weavers. He criticised the government for removing subsidy on handloom cloth. He said that Andhra Pradesh should emulate Tamil Nadu that provided 40 per cent rebate on handloom cloth sold through Cooptex outlets. Mr. Chiranjeevi was accorded a warm welcome when he passed through Krishna delta villages in Chirala, Vetapalem, Inkolle and Perchoor mandals .
