PATHANAMTHITTA: Umeshbabu, environmentalist and founder of the Viswadarshanam Centre for Humanity and Nature at Nariyapauram, near here, died at Pushpagiri Medical College in Thiruvalla on Tuesday. He was 60.
He had won the national award for environment conservation in 1997 and the Harithasri award in 2009.
He was a member of the Commonwealth Human Ecology Council, Youth Hostel Association of India and the National Adventure Foundation.
Umeshbabu wound up his advertising business in 1987 to establish a nature centre on his one-acre ancestral property at Nariyapuram. That was the beginning of the Viswadarshanam centre.
The centre launched a programme, Outdoor Nature School, for school/ college students in 2002.
Umeshbabu also promoted organic farming at his nature centre.
