Seven quintals of cotton seed seized, five held

Gang members wanted to make a quick buck ahead of the rainy season

Police act on a tip-off given by farmers during the Rytu Chaitanya Yatras

NALGONDA:The police have seized seven quintals of cotton seed and arrested five persons of an inter-district gang allegedly engaged in the illegal trade in Suryapet on Monday night.

The seizure brought to the fore the attempts by the members of some organised gangs to sell cotton seed to the gullible farmers and make a quick buck ahead of the rainy season.

Acting on a tip-off given by some farmers during the Rytu Chaitanya Yatras, the mandal agriculture officials have alerted the local police about the suspected movement of unscrupulous elements for the sale of unauthorized seed.

The police subsequently raided a house at Sriramnagar in Suryapet and recovered seven quintals of seed and 7,635 empty sachets. The police detained five persons who were allegedly packing the seed into attractive sachets. The gang allegedly procured the sachets from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

When contacted, Suryapet CI Lakshminarayana told The Hindu that five members of the gang were nabbed from a rented house at Sriramnagar.

The arrested include Kalyan of Gannavaram in Krishna district, Mohan Reddy of Nalgonda district, Raghu of Mahabubnagar district, S Srinivas of Kurnool and A Srinivas of Hyderabad.

The town police registered a cheating case against them based on a complaint lodged by the Mandal Agriculture Officer.
