AIIMS directed to create space for charitable trusts

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences to frame a policy for making available spaces in its premises for charitable trusts willing to distribute free medicines within three months of the order and implement it within the same period of time.A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice Valmiki Mehta passed the direction on a writ petition by non-government organisation Surekha Public Charity Trust.

Free medicines

Counsel for the trust submitted that no space had been earmarked in the Institute's complex for any charitable institution to open a medical shop for distributing free medicines to poor patients who visit there for treatment.

The petitioner further submitted that it wanted a space in the Institute's complex for distributing free medicines.

The Bench in its order said: “We are of the considered view that there can really be no dispute about the advisability or requirement of having a space/spaces allotted to charitable institutions/organisations for giving free/subsidised medicines to poor patients who visit AIIMS. If space can be allotted for existing barber shops, tailor shops and beauty parlours, certainly a space/spaces can be allotted for such charitable purposes.''

Disposing of the petition, the Bench listed the matter for filing of a compliance report on the directions by the Institute on September 10
