39 flyovers to be beautified before Games

Ten to be landscaped through designs made by consultants

29 to be beautified on designs by in-house architects of the department


NEW DELHI: The Public Works Department of the Delhi Government has taken up a comprehensive project for beautification of flyovers under which ten of them would be landscaped through designs made by consultants while another 29 would be beautified on the basis of designs by in-house architects of the department.

All these projects would be completed before August 15, a meeting convened under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to review the progress of work undertaken by PWD for the Commonwealth Games was informed on Tuesday.

The meeting was informed that on completion of the beautification work the flyovers will don a more pleasing look.

It was also stated that while 14 of the 24 flyovers being constructed ahead of the Games have become operational, work on the remaining 10 is in progress.

Of these, two will be completed in June, five in July and three in September.

The Chief Minister directed the PWD to concentrate on completion of a flyover on National Highway-24 bypass near Ghazipur, elevated Barapullah Road, corridor improvement of Road No.56 and Ring Road bypass as all these four projects are very important for the upcoming Games.

The officials then informed that 93 per cent work on the Gazipur project, 84 per cent on Barapullah Nullah and 83 per cent on the Ring Road bypass has already been completed.

It was also stated that the PWD has decided to work on new models of foot over-bridges so that they are not only modern and attractive but also very convenient. While 31 bridges have been completed, work on 26 is in progress.

These structures are expected to raise the level of pedestrian safety and reduce accidents on roads.

Ms. Dikshit also directed the PWD to speed up landscaping and installation of road signs and complete all works by July. The department has undertaken road signage work on 410 km of roads.

Street-lighting

As far as street-lighting is concerned, the meeting was informed that out of 471 km of roads taken up for installation of new lights, work on 460 km has been completed. The entire Rs.197 crore street-lighting project is expected to be completed by June-end.

As for the work on widening and strengthening of roads, the PWD has completed work on 52.3 lane km out of a total length of 67.7 lane km. So, while 83 per cent work has been completed, the remainder is due for completion by June-end.
