Indiramma house unit cost for SCs/STs hiked

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State government has enhanced the unit cost of houses built under the second and also the third phase of Indiramma housing programme for SCs and STs by Rs 20,000 in rural areas and Rs 30,000 in towns and cities. The additional amount will be arranged through bank loans.

The total unit cost will now work out to Rs 54,250 in rural and Rs 70,000 in urban areas.

Surplus loan amount

Announcing this at a media conference here on Tuesday, Housing Minister C. Shilpa Mohan Reddy and M. Samuel, Principal Secretary, Housing, said an additional loan amount of Rs 208 crore had been released in just four months till May 14 in tune with the increase in the unit cost.

About one lakh families had benefited from it. The Minister denied media reports alleging that the housing scheme was sought to be discontinued or diluted.

He, however, admitted that the programme suffered from irregularities with some officials indulging in corruption.

Action plan

An action plan had been prepared to implement the reforms proposed by Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to end corruption. Accordingly, payments to beneficiaries through SHGs were stopped and the bills paid only if they opened individual accounts in banks or post-offices.
