Rain disrupts power supply

CHENNAI: The rain due to the cyclonic storm since Tuesday, which intensified in the early hours on Wednesday, resulted in power failure in several parts of the city.

Technical faults in the feeder line supplying power to the Koyambedu substation resulted in blackout of several areas in the southern parts of the city on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday. Areas, including Koyambedu, K. K. Nagar, Kodambakkam, Virugambakkam, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar and nearby areas went without electricity for over two hours.

In north Chennai the tripping of a feeder line in the Tondiarpet substation left several areas, including Tondiarpet, Tiruvottiyur, Old Washermenpet, Royapuram and Korukkupet, without power for several hours on Wednesday evening.

Several areas also faced power disruptions after trees uprooted by the powerful wind and heavy rains damaged the cables. Residents of Villivakkam, Velachery, Choolai, Tambaram, Keelkattalai, Pammal, Pallavaram, Madipakkam and Thoraipakkam faced power disruptions at frequent intervals.

A senior official of the TNEB said a technical snag on the feeder line between Sriperumbudur and Koyambedu at 3.20 a.m. resulted in power blackout in several parts of the city. Power supply was restored in phases by drawing electricity from the Ramapuram substation. A fault in the Tondiarpet substation resulted in power failure from 3.45 p.m., on Wednesday. The supply was restored around 7 p.m.

In Purasawalkam the collapse of a telecom tower installed atop a textile showroom building on Subramaniam Street on a transformer on Wednesday morning resulted in power breakdown for the entire day on Subramaniam Street, Muthial Street, Sundaram Lane and parts of Purasawalkam High Road. An official of the TNEB said that Rs.65,000 has been collected from the owner of the building towards the damage caused to the transformer.
