Survey on migrant population to begin

SANGAREDDY:For the first time in the State, a comprehensive survey of the migrant population is being conducted beginning with eight districts tomorrow.

Similar surveys are being conducted across the nation, aimed at assessing the migrant population and the requirements that need to be met by the government to support this population.

The survey is being conducted by Rajiv Vidya Mission, Labour Department and Industries Department along with voluntary organisations working in this area. Aide-et-Action – South Asia, a Chennai based voluntary organisation has been coordinating the survey. As per the survey conducted in 1999-2000, the migrant population was estimated at about 11 lakh across the State; which included inter State and inter district migrants in different seasons including construction and crop cutting.

Incomplete data

However, the officials admit that complete data was not available with any department as no survey was conducted after that except voluntary organisations submitting reports occasionally. It is expected that the number of migrants would touch fourfold by now. In the first phase of the survey beginning tomorrow, Vizag, Krishna, Chittoor, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, Medak, Khammam and Hyderabad districts would be covered by May 27.

The survey include information like the place from where they migrated, where they are staying, how long the stay will be, social and financial conditions of these migrants and what is required to meet the educational needs of children among other issues.

The second phase would cover Warangal, Guntur, Prakasham, Nellore, Kurnool and West Godavari districts followed by Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Kadapa, Anantapur, Mahaboobnagar, East Godavari, Karimnagar, Adilabad and Nizamabad districts. An action plan based on the final report would be prepared by June 14.
