Guidelines soon to bar sale of expired food products: Velu

Chennai: The government will frame guidelines to prevent sale of expired food products without affecting traders, said Food Minister E.V. Velu on Wednesday.
The government has been conducting random checks in shops to prevent the sale.
Accepting traders' demand for fresh guidelines, the Minister convened a meeting with the federation of traders associations at the Secretariat on Wednesday and assured them that their other demands would also be considered.
Complaining that manufacturers were not taking back expired food products, the traders demanded the government take action against them.
They also wanted the government to regulate the monitoring mechanism by setting up committees at district and State levels.
Mr. Velu said he would consult the Chief Minister on the demands of the traders. and promised to frame guidelines for regulating the sale of food products without affecting the interests of traders and consumers.
