The entire admission procedure can be done online Eligible students will be selected based on their SAT-11 scores MANGALORE: The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has chosen the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka, Surathkal, for coordinating admissions of foreign students, persons of Indian origin, and non-resident Indians, to Centrally funded institutions in the country for three years from this academic year, according to Director of NITK Sandeep Sancheti. Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a seminar at Surathkal on Thursday, he said that the admissions will be co-ordinated under the Direct Admissions of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme for the academic years 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. Under the scheme, admission of foreign students, persons of Indian origin and non-resident Indians to the Centrally-funded institutions will be made through the NIT-K, he said. The ministry introduced the scheme in the academic year 2001-02. Mr. Sancheti said that following an order issued on March 4, 2010, under the revised procedure for admissions through the scheme, the entire procedure — application, processing, counselling, submission of documents, payment of fees — will be carried out online. Under the revised procedure, eligible students will be selected on the basis of their Scholastic Aptitude Test-II scores and can be allotted seats in 31 institutes across the country, which include 24 National Institutes of Technology, three Indian Institutes of Information Technology, and four other institutions. Until now, only 20 institutes were implementing the DASA scheme. Only B.Tech. for now At present, the total number of seats available across 31 institutions for the B.Tech programme is 2,204. “Since the order was issued only in March this year, we are able to offer only B.Tech. programme. From the next academic year, we will definitely be offering M.Tech and Ph.D. courses, and possibly even Master of Business Administration, Master of Computer Applications and Master of Science,” he said.
