The Ashoka tree is known for its environmental and medicinal importance. KOLLAM: The Forest Department has launched a programme to protect, conserve and propagate the Ashoka tree ( Saraca asoca) that faces the threat of extinction. The programme has been launched taking into consideration the environmental and medicinal importance of the tree. The department will request people having an Ashoka tree in their garden/ compound to inform the department if the tree has started producing seeds. The tree usually flowers from February to April and starts producing seeds in May. The seeds usually go waste. The attempt of the department is to collect the seeds from individual houses and propagate them. The saplings will be distributed to the people and propagated under the social forestry programme and inside forests. The programme to collect the seeds from individual houses is launched as the department faces shortage of seeds. All expenses in this regard will be met by the department. Conservator of Forests Mohammed Naushad said more than 2,000 seeds were collected last week from a single house here. In Kollam, information regarding the tree can be given on phone number 0474 2742660 and 9447 979030. Those in the Punalur area can call 9447 979034. Mr. Naushad said the programme was being undertaken in association with the National Medicinal Plants Board.
