MADURAI: Changing the schedule of train no. 711 Dindigul-Madurai has put the regular commuters into lot of inconvenience. Passengers from Karupatti and Sholavandan have sought the railway administration to revert the train departure timing to 7.40 a.m. in Dindigul. In a statement, the passengers from Karupatti and Sholavandan said the train used to leave Dindigul at 7.40 a.m. and reach Madurai at 8.45 a.m. This was convenient for the passengers to spread out to various destinations in Madurai city for their daily work. But the train timing was changed a month back. It departed at 7.55 a.m. to reach Madurai at 9.10 a.m. However, in reality, it reaches Madurai at 9.20 a.m. only. Many of the days it reached only at 9.30 a.m. to give way for special trains operated in the summer vacation and when goods trains are operated. The commuters find it difficult to reach their destination on time. The number of passengers using the service has come down drastically in the last few days. “Those from the unorganised sector are the worst affected. Passengers from Karuppatti, Sholavandan, who spend only Rs. 8 a day (for two way journey) have to spend Rs. 13 on bus from the morning journey,” one of the passengers said. Despite the reduction of the number of coaches in the train during the summer, the train that used to be crowded was not attracting enough passengers these days, he added.
