VISAKHAPATNAM: A mother and son were electrocuted at Seethammapeta here on Thursday. Allu Mahalakshmi, 40, of Kanakamma Veedhi was hanging clothes on the galvanised iron wire to dry when the incident occurred. One end of the GI wire was tied to a telephone pole, which was just outside the building, and the other end was tied to a wall in the varendah. Around 12.30 p.m. Mahalakshmi was hanging a sari to dry on the wire when she received shock. She shrieked for help and her son Pradeep, 20, rushed out of the house and in his anxiety to save her caught hold of her and tried to pull her. Both were electrocuted, according to Fourth Town SI A. Satya Rao. He said that some serial sets (decorative lights) were put up on the street for some function. The organisers had obtained the necessary permission and installed the serial sets on poles close to the telephone pole. In view of gales and the cyclonic storm the serial lines could have come in contact with the telephone pole. The victims were taken to a private hospital where they were declared dead on admission. Complaint lodged Mahalakshmi's husband A. Taviti Naidu, who is a works inspector in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) lodged a complaint with the Fourth Town Police. Mayor Pulusu Janardhan Rao, Municipal Commissioner V.N. Vishnu, Chief Engineer B. Jayarama Reddy, other officials and union representatives called on the bereaved family members.
