PROTEST:All India Democratic Women Association staging a road blockade at Nagapattinam bus terminus on Thursday. — NAGAPATTINAM: The All India Democratic Women Association of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a road blockade agitating against a slew of ‘grievances' against the government. Condemning the frequent power failure, AIDWA called for a halt in both announced and unannounced power failures across the State. Further, it sought regularisation of ‘malfunctioning and dysfunctioning' NREGS programme in Tamil Nadu. Attributing credit to the left parties for turning NREGS into a statutory reality, G. Kalai Selvi, district secretary, AIDWA demanded its regularisation. Speaking on the functioning of the public distribution system in the State, Ms.Selvi stated that the PDS was brought to the State by the agitations of the AIDWA cadre, who had then left for West Bengal to learn the model of its successful functioning there. “Non-availability of essential rations, and recurrent shortage pointed to a failed PDS in the State,” Ms.Selvi said. Further, problem of water scarcity, and absence of sanitised water for a majority of population was criticised. Coming down on the Kalaignar's Housing Scheme, Ms.Selvi stated that while majority of poor were landless, the Scheme's promise of construction of concrete houses for those with pattas would make no difference to the poor. The road blockade, organised as part of the nation-wide agitation against various “flawed” policies of the government, was concluded after the AIDWA workers courted arrest.
