Prize winners savour Tiruchi visit

TIRUCHI: The third-prize winners of the State-level elocution, oratory, and slogan writing competitions conducted by the Department of Public Libraries savoured the opportunity to visit the many spots of tourism importance in Tiruchi recently as part of their Tamil Nadu tour.

Their joy knew no bounds in knowing about the historical and archaeological significance of all the places they visited in the company of their peers of similar wavelength. They seemed to enjoy a packed schedule.

During their visit, the 12 students had another important reason to consider their visit memorable. They were felicitated by State Transport Minister K. N. Nehru, District Collector T. Soundiah, Corporation Commissioner T. T. Balsamy and Deputy Mayor M. Ambazhagan. The District Library Officer, A. P. Sivakumar introduced them to the Minister and the officials. The Minister adorned the student team with shawls. The students from standards IX to XII comprised M. Milton of Madurai, P. Chitra of Tiruvallur, V. Kanchanadevi of Kancheepuram, T. M. Thileepan of Ramanathapuram, S. Saranya of Kancheepuram, S. KevinVimala Mary of Tuticorin, M. Rehman of Karur, S. Bhavya of Dharmapuri, P. Tamilselvi of Coimbatore, R. Akalya of Chennai, K. Swathi of Kancheepuram, and Sri Akshaya of Dharmapuri.

The competition was conducted in phases. In the first phase it was conducted all over the State at the taluk level. At the second level, the district-level competitions were held for two winners each of every taluk. The final competition was held at Chennai.

The first prize winners were taken on a tour to Singapore. The second prize winners were taken on an All India tour. The initiative of the Department of Public Libraries was mainly intended to motivate students to develop reading habit. Next year, the first prize winners are to be taken on a tour of European countries.
