Absconding life convict held in Samant case

Staff Reporter

Mumbai: Vijay Ramchandra Thopte, convicted of the murder of trade union leader Datta Samant, was arrested in Navi Mumbai on Thursday. He was absconding for five years after he had jumped parole on May 18, 2005.

Samant, who was killed in January 1997, had led the historic textile mill workers' strike of 1982. His murder sent shock waves throughout Maharashtra.

Datta Shinde, Navi Mumbai's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime, told The Hindu on the phone that Thopte was arrested along with three others from Vashi. The police had received information that the group was to assemble there to hatch an extortion conspiracy. It worked for gangster Guru Satam.

The police recovered a pistol and two rounds from Thopte, and a revolver and four rounds from Jagannath Balkaran Jaiswal. The other two arrested were Sandeep Tivakar and Deepak Pednekar. A case of criminal conspiracy and extortion has been registered against them.
