Kashyap claims a double

MANDYA: A. Kashyap of Karnataka beat his doubles partner and a fellow trainee at Tennis Advantage, Anthony Savio, in an absorbing boys' under-16 singles final 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to claim the title in the AITA Champion Series junior tennis tournament, organised by People's Education Trust (PET) at the PET courts here on Friday.

Kashyap thus completed a creditable double as he had won the under-16 doubles title along with Savio on Thursday.

In the first set, Kashyap, breaking Savio twice, raced to a 4-0 lead. Savio paid for his sloppy first serve, as he dropped the third game with three double faults. He did manage to hold his serve in the fifth and seventh games, but was still a far cry from mounting an effective challenge to Kashyap, who simply kept the lead and momentum to close the set at 6-2.

Savio came up with a much better show in the second set and led 2-0 before Kashyap rallied to level at 4-all. Savio raised the pitch with a series of winners of on both flanks to take a 5-4 lead on serve and then decisively broke Kashyap in the 10th to take the set at 6-4.

The stage was set for an engrossing decider, but Savio, after conceding 3-0 lead to his rival, hardly did anything right as he tumbled to defeat with a spate of unforced errors.

In the girls' section, S.P. Ritu of Karnataka and Pragati Nataraj of Tamil Nadu won the under-16 and 14 titles respectively. Ritu scored an emphatic 6-1, 6-3 victory over unseeded Tejaswini Belludi while Pragati prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Dr. P.C. Jaffer, District Commissioner, Mandya, gave away the prizes, while Mr. H.D. Chowdaiaiah of People's Education's Trust, which sponsored the event, presided.

Boys: U-16: A. Kashyap (Kar) bt Anthony Savio (Kar) 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Doubles: Anthony Savio & A. Kashyap bt Naveen Kumar & Subash Kaushik (TN) 7-6(8), 6-3.

Girls: U-16: S. Ritu (Kar) bt Tejaswini Belludi (Kar) 6-1, 6-3. Doubles: Lavanya & Binu (TN) bt C.S. Praneeta & A. Shameema (TN) 6-4, 6-2.

U-14: Pragati Nataraj (TN) bt Kavya N. Kumar (Kar) 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 .
