Beast of burden
Photo: R. Ragu
No Escape:A bullock, weighed down by the load in its cart, trudges up a road at Salt Quarters in Chennai. —
Corrections and Clarifications
The caption of a standalone photograph titled "Beast of Burden" (Chennai
city, May 23, 2010, page 2) was "No Escape: A bullock, weighed down by the
load in its cart, trudges up a road at Salt Quarters in Chennai." It's Salt
Cotaurs. The word "Cotaur" is the Anglicised version of the Telugu word
"Cotauru" meaning "godown". There was once a godown for storing salt bags in
this area (on the bank of the Buckingham Canal, north of Chennai Central
railway station), and the loading station Salt Cotaurs.
