Association seeks political and

legal solution

Alleges harassment of hospital owners

KOCHI: The Qualified Private Medical Practitioners and Hospitals Association (QPMPA) has expanded the organisation to the national level by organising its first national conference along with the 36 {+t} {+h} State conference.

About 30 participants from other States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab and Delhi participated in the meeting.

New president of the association O. Baby said the organisation would work towards evolving a political and legal solution to stop attacks on doctors and hospitals.

Safety

Doctors practicing in private hospitals in the State, that cater to about 70 per cent of the population, should feel safe in their clinics, he said.

The organisation also demanded that harassment of private hospital owners because of frequent interventions by government departments and officials should also be lessened.

The organisation would form a multi-State cooperative society to make available financial aid to hospitals at a lower interest rate for upgrading and renovation works, Dr. Baby said.

The association would insist on a State-level monitoring system of private hospitals according to the policy dictated by the Centre. This would involve registering and ensuring minimum standards of healthcare in the private sector, Dr. Baby said.

Branches

He said new branches of the organisation would be opened in Chennai, Salem and Coimbatore in a month while one branch each would be opened in Karnataka, Punjab and Delhi soon.

The other office-bearers are: B.V. Bhat of Kannur is the secretary and T.S. Zacharia of Kottayam is the treasurer.

The joint conference was inaugurated by Kerala Congress (M) chairman K.M. Mani on Saturday. P.R. Raman, Judge, High Court, gave the keynote address during the inaugural function of the launch of national body and scientific sessions held on Sunday.

Among various presentations was a project of the Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Gasification Plant in India in waste disposal other than biomedical waste in hospitals.
