Medical examination confirms assault; duo arrested

Woman came in contact with the constable while selling a life insurance policy

The two struck a friendship and decided to have a get-together over the weekend

NEW DELHI: A Delhi Traffic Police constable and his friend have been arrested for alleged criminal assault on an insurance agent in a moving car in the high-security New Delhi area two days ago.

The incident came to light when the 30-year-old woman, a native of Orissa, lodged a complaint at the Connaught Place police station on Monday. Constable Manoj Kumar (25) and his accomplice Sudhir Gehlot (25) were arrested after medical examination of the victim confirmed the assault.

The woman came in contact with the constable about a month ago when she called him for selling a life insurance policy. “The two struck a friendship during subsequent telephonic conversations and decided to have a get-together over the weekend. As per the plan, Manoj reached the Lajpat Nagar house of the woman along with his friend Sudhir in a Alto car on May 23 around 9-30 p.m. The woman joined them in the car and the three drove around in the New Delhi area for several hours,” said a senior police officer.

The trio stopped at several eating joints in between and bought beer, chicken and other eatables. “Around midnight, the two men started misbehaving with the woman. When she objected to it, they took turns to sexually assault her in the moving car. The two later dropped her at her rented accommodation in the early hours of Monday. When she threatened to report the matter to the police, the two even took away her mobile phone. She lodged a complaint in the evening and the two were arrested,” the officer said.

The woman had shifted to Delhi four months ago. Her husband and a daughter are in Orissa. Both the accused stay in Uttam Nagar and are neighbours.

Sudhir is a manager with a catering firm at Delhi airport. The car used in the crime belonged to him.
