Tribals showcase their rich culture at festival

Todas, Kotas, Irulas, Paniyans and Kattunayakans attend

Udhagamandalam: The Tribal Research Centre (TRC) at M.Palada near here came alive on Wednesday with tribals from various parts of the state congregating there to showcase their rich culture.

The occasion was a two-day Tribal Music and Dance Festival titled Pazhangudi Maadham organised by the TRC.

On show was the dance and musical traditions of a number of tribal communities including Todas, Kotas, Irulas, Paniyans, Kattunayakans, Mullu Kurumbars, Alu Kurumbars, Muduvans, Paliyars, Kadars and Kaniyans.

Inaugurating the festival, the Adi-dravidar and Tribal Welfare Minister A.Thamizharasi said that such an event was being organised for the first time.

The objective was to enhance awareness about tribal culture among various sections of society.

Stating that the Karunanidhi government was implementing a number of schemes for tribal welfare, she said that over the last four years several crores had been set aside.

A. Soundarapandian, MLA, presided over the unique event.

Among those present were the Secretary, Adidravidar and Tribal Welfare Vishwanath Shegaonkar, Commisioner, Tribal Welfare P. Sivasankaran and the Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik.

The Director, TRC, C.R.Sathyanarayanan proposed a vote of thanks.
