Miniplexes in villages mooted

Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: The State is set to witness a miniplex movement soon that would serve cinema, education and banking for the rural regions besides promoting the entertainment industry and generating employment.

In a novel move, city-based Sankalp TV and Cinemass, an agency providing technological service for the film industry, have come together to undertake an ambitious project of setting up 1,500 miniplexes across Orissa. “The project is estimated at Rs.300 crores and it would generate direct employment opportunity to about 15,000 persons, stated Sankalp TV director Ashok Das.

A miniplex would come up in a cluster of four gram panchayats through franchise scheme and each would have a seating capacity of 75 people, he elaborated. The ticket would cost Rs.10 each – affordable for the poorest people in villages.

Learning centres

The mini theatre halls would screen high definition films which would be connected through satellite, explained Cinemass chief Anurag Gupta. Besides film screening, the miniplexes could also serve as centres of e-learning, skill development training and mobile banking, he said. Different government and non-government agencies engaged in rural development programmes could also use these centres for conveniently connecting to the people, he hoped.

The project would later include low-cost Oriya film production to suit the need of the rural population, Mr. Das said.
