Monsoon trawling ban from June 16

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Cabinet on Wednesday decided to introduce the annual ban on trawling along the sea off the State coast from June 16 to July 31. The seasonal ban is introduced to conserve fish resources, the southwest monsoon being the breeding season of many fish species.

Cabinet decisions

Briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the Cabinet had decided to give title deeds to eligible persons who were in possession of 70 acres of government puramboke land at Kuttampuzha village in Kothamangalam taluk in Ernakulam district.

The Cabinet also decided to provide ration rice at Rs.2 a kg to the families of the Endosulfan victims (affected by the spraying of the pesticide in estates) in Kasaragod district.

The victims with mental or physical abnormalities would be given Rs.400 a month in addition to a pension for the physically challenged. Besides, the government decided to provide Rs.300 a month to the bystanders of bed-ridden patients. The families of bed-ridden victims would now get a total of Rs.1,000 a month (including the pension of Rs.300 a month).

Coke issue

The Cabinet asked Chief Secretary P. Prabhakaran to examine the controversial remark of Principal Secretary (Industries) T. Balakrishnan about the Coca-Cola unit at Plachimada (Palakkad district).

Mr. Balakrishnan had told a face-to-face programme with industrialists in Kozhikode on Monday that he regretted that the Coca-Cola unit could not be saved.

The Chief Minister said that the Chief Secretary would look into the matter and submit a report to the Cabinet at its next meeting.

An expert-committee, constituted by the State government with Additional Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar as chairman, had recommended that the Coca-Cola company be made to pay compensation for the environmental and other damages caused by it at Plachimada.
