P. Maheswari.
G. Anushya VIRUDHUNAGAR: For both, P. Maheswari and G. Anushuya, getting first rank in their class had been their habit since primary school. And they got it bigger in their S.S.L.C. and Matriculation examinations respectively at the district level. Maheswari of A.V.M. Marimuthu Nadar Higher Secondary School, secured 493 marks with a centum in Mathematics. She scored 99 marks each in Science and Social Science. She got 98 marks and 97 marks in English and Tamil respectively. Her father, S. Palanichamy, who runs a tea-stall in Maraneri and mother, P. Backialakshmi, a housewife, encouraged her to get higher marks, Maheswari said. The parents never entrusted any domestic work to her. “We did not have cable television connection for the past one year,” she said. She had never been for a private tuition. All that the special coaching she had was at her school during Saturdays and Sundays. She practised as many special tests as possible at home with the question papers given by her school teachers. Like her elder sister, P. Sasikala, a student of the same school, Maheswari too got annual scholarship from Ma. Foi Foundation. Maheswari wants to become an IAS officer to serve the society at large. For Anushuya, her friends were great motivators. “They had always been telling me that they wanted to see my name in the rank list,” she said. She scored a centum 100 in Mathematics, 98 marks each in Science and Social Science. She got 97 marks in Tamil and 93 marks in English. Anushuya said that she became very serious in studies only after January. She revised all her portions between 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. though she did not miss any of her favourite television programme. Her father, Giridharan, a professional photographer and mother, G. Mala, said that they never had the opportunity to advise her to be serious in her study. Anushuya wants to pursue bio-technology.
