GUNTUR: The Prohibition and Excise Department in the district is keeping its fingers crossed as fresh bids are being called for leasing of 342 notified liquor shops in the district. District Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu released the gazette notification on Friday and the deadline for accepting the bids is June 5. The tenders would be opened at Bandlamudi Gardens on June 7. Upset price Of the three divisions in the district, Narsaraopet has 130 notified shops, followed by Tenali (125) and Guntur (87). The lease period would expire on June 30, 2012. With the department revising the target by raising upset price by 15 per cent for 2010-2012, a windfall is expected as the Excise Department continues to be one of the revenue generation departments in the State. The revised target is about Rs.230 crores. Thanks to the pre-election hype, the department earned a record profit in the auctions held in 2008 as liquor traders made record bids for bagging licences as the department raked in Rs.203.56 crores, a cool 100 per cent increase. Of the three divisions, Narasaraopet fetched the highest revenue of Rs.91 crores, followed by Guntur Rs.58.07 crores and Tenali Rs.54.06 crores.
