Thrissur: The National Textile Corporation-run textile mills in the State should increase their productivity, NTC chairman-cum-managing director K. Ramachandran Pillai has said. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said that problems in the NTC-run Parvathy Mills were being sorted out. “The Vijayamohini Mill in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Lekshmi Mill and Alagappa Textile Mill in Thrissur and the Kannur Spinning and Weaving Mill have benefited by the NTC's revival package. Their current capacity utilisation of 80 per cent should be increased to 98 per cent in order to compete with private players,” the NTC chief added. He said the NTC targeted a profit of Rs.50 crore this fiscal. Twenty-four mills across the country have been revived and sick ones closed. With their modernisation, 18 mills have begun to make profits. In 2009-10, the NTC posted 31 per cent growth with its turnover increasing to Rs.526 crore from Rs.398 crore in 2008-09. The NTC raised finances for its revival package of Rs.9,102 crore through internal generation of resources by sale of assets and private placement of bonds. In Mumbai alone, the NTC has 50 acres to be sold. The number of employees has been brought down from 89,000 to 8,000, he stated.
