Social security for domestic workers soon

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Rajasthan is planning to formulate a legislation to provide social security to domestic workers after inviting suggestions in this regard from representatives of trade unions and labour organisations. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had proposed enactment of a law in this year's Budget speech.

State Principal Labour and Employment Secretary Manohar Kant said at a workshop here over the weekend that the implementation of the proposed statute would be ensured through a special campaign.

He said the number of full-time labourers in the State was 2.37 crore according to the 2001 Census, and added that 92 per cent of them were in the unorganised sector.

The law would provide for registration of domestic helps, fixing of their working hours as well as minimum wages, and a weekly holiday for them. He said a separate board and a welfare fund would also be established under the legislation.

Mr. Kant emphasised the need for generating awareness among domestic workers for their rights and affirmed that steps should be taken to extend the benefits of various welfare schemes to them.
