10,000 saplings to be planted on World Environment Day

Committee set up to select species suitable for each street

Tree census to begin on June 5

KOCHI: A ‘Green Kochi Green City' campaign will be launched here on June 5 to mark the World Environment Day celebrations of the Kochi Corporation.

The occasion will also be used to launch the one lakh sapling planting scheme, which was announced in the Corporation budget, said E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman of the Town Planning Standing committee of the Corporation.

The formal launch of the campaign will be held at Gandhi Square here at 11 a.m. Several residents' associations; organisations of traders and hoteliers; and industry have offered support for the programme.

On June 5, at least 10,000 saplings will be planted in as many as 10 divisions, including Konthuruthy and Pachalam, he said.

Neem saplings

Plans are afoot to supply at least 25,000 ‘Arya Veppu' (Neem) saplings to households through residents' associations. The programme is to plant at least one Neem sapling each in 25,000 households in the city, he said.

Besides Neem, fruit and flowering trees will also be distributed to various organisations.

The civic authorities plan to set up a Mayor's Green Square at Subhash Bose Park, where former Mayors will plant saplings.

Saplings in memory of the departed leaders will also be planted. The traders' organisation has offered to beautify the road median between Shanmugham Road and the Kerala High Court and plant saplings in available space, he said.

A three-member committee has been constituted by the civic authorities to select the species of trees suitable for each street.

Saplings will be distributed as per the recommendations of the expert committee.

The city will offer a guard of honour to two of the oldest trees in the city in recognition of its environmental contribution.

The environmental contributions of these trees will be exhibited near them.

Meeting

A meeting of the residents' associations and socio-cultural organisations will be held at Fort Kochi on June 3 to finalise the planting of saplings programme in West Kochi area.

The authorities are planning to entrust the Kudumbasree units with the responsibility of protecting the saplings.

The organisations which have come forward for contributing tree guards will also be requested to take up the responsibility of protecting the saplings.

Such a measure will ensure that the saplings are protected for the coming years, he said. The Town Planning Committee has also decided to launch the much-delayed tree census on the World Environment Day. Though it was announced around six months ago, it could not be launched due to various hitches.
