AWARD CEREMONY: Writer Sukumar Azhikode addresses a meeting in Thrissur on Sunday to present the Kerala Sahitya Akademi endowments for 2009. Thrissur: The Kerala Sahitya Akademi endowments for 2009 were presented at a function here on Sunday. Addressing the gathering, writer and social activist Sukumar Azhikode said that writers should strive to be closer to the masses. ‘Pride of place' “Literature once enjoyed pride of place in every family. It should regain its status,” he said. He said that the term, ‘Purogamana Sahityam' (progressive literature), denoted literature that dealt with the progress of the marginalised. “It does not signify the progress of literature. Ideologues such as K.E.N. Kunjahammed should understand this,” Prof. Azhikode stated. Akademi president P. Valsala presented the endowments in different categories.
