Thrissur: The police on Sunday regained custody of Mohammad Rafi, an accused in the 2001 Mandalamkunnu Nisham murder attempt case, after CPI(M) workers allegedly got him released from police custody on Saturday. Rafi, reportedly a CPI(M) worker, had been absconding for the past seven years. The police closed in on him on Saturday after he returned from the Gulf. A group of CPI(M) workers, including party branch secretary Usman, allegedly assaulted the police after they took Rafi into custody and got him released. Policemen Benny, 36, and Jofi Raj, 38, sustained injuries and were hospitalised.The Vadakkekkad police registered a case against 10.
