Una hottest in HP at 39 degrees Hisar in Haryana records 44.5 degrees New Delhi: Snow and rain in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir led to the death of two women even as temperatures rose at some places in the northern plains after a brief respite. While one woman died in a house collapse at Gand-Pathri near Pahalgam, another woman died due to the cold at Lehwan-Larnoo in Kokernag. The unseasonal snow and rains also claimed the lives of over 900 animals in Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir. Light rain in Himachal In Himachal Pradesh, marginal variation in day and night temperatures was observed as the weather was windy with light rain at isolated places. State capital Shimla recorded a high of 25.9 degrees against 25.6 degrees on Saturday. Dharamsala experienced 6 mm of rain but the maximum temperature rose marginally to 30.6 degrees. Una was the hottest in the State as the temperature there rose by 1.2 degrees to touch 39 degrees. Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti was the coldest with the low being recorded at 2.5 degrees, four degrees below normal. In the northern plains, including Haryana and Punjab, rains in the past two days had led to a dip in daytime temperatures, giving a brief respite to the people. The temperature was, however, on the upswing on Sunday with Hisar recording a high of 44.5 degrees. Ambala saw the mercury settle at 40.2 degrees and in Karnal, the high stood at 40.4 degrees. Yesterday, Ambala had experienced a high of 38.6 degrees and Karnal 37.8 degrees. Chandigarh experienced a daytime temperature of 39.7 degrees. Patiala in Punjab saw the mercury settle at 41.2 degrees while in Amritsar, the high was recorded at 40.5 degrees. Ludhiana had a maximum temperature of 40.6 degrees, up from yesterday's 39.1 degrees. In Rajasthan, Behror, Bhiwadi and surrounding areas of Alwar district received rain accompanied by hail. However, the maximum temperature was high in Kota at 45.6 degrees, according to the Met office. Jaipur, Sriganganagar, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Ajmer recorded highs 43.4, 42.4, 42, 41.3 and 41 degrees respectively. Jawan dies of sun stroke Shivpuri: A 44-year-old jawan of Madhya Pradesh Special Armed Force (SAF) died of suspected sun stroke here, an official said on Sunday. Kedar Prasad Manjhi of 18th battalion of SAF suffered a sun stroke on May 28 and was taken to district hospital, where he died on Saturday, according to SAF 18th Battalion Assistant Commandant J. P. Uike. Manjhi, who hailed from Rewa district, had returned from vacation a few days back. With the mercury hovering over 45 degree Celsius, this was the third death in the district due to heat stroke in past one week. -- PTI
