History Association to partake in World Classical Tamil meet

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: Members of the History Association here have resolved to participate in the World Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore.

According to association president V.J. Jayapaul Asirvatham, the members lauded Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi for making a series of efforts in organising such an important and historic meet in the State. The meeting also decided to attend the conference in large numbers. It passed various resolutions.

District Education Officer Swaminathan, who was the chief guest, appealed to the history teachers to teach the subject to the students in such a manner that the children enjoyed it and understood well. History had become the most opted subject in the central service commission examinations by many students who passed with flying colours, he underlined.

The meeting also hailed the “samacheer kalvi thittam” introduced by the State government. Like in other subjects, History students should be given 50 marks for practicals and 150 marks for theory. Field visits of historic spots should form part of the examination. Teachers' fee for evaluating answer sheets should be enhanced from a meagre Rs.5 to Rs.10 each. The meeting also resolved minor amendments to the pattern of question paper which would not only be student friendly, but also be comprehensive.

Apart from general secretary M. Namasivayam and treasurer D. Ruby Mallika, members participated in the annual general body meeting, a press release issued here on Sunday said.
