Woman arrested on charge of stealing in-laws' jewellery

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old woman has been arrested along with five of her relatives on charges of committing theft in the house of her in-laws at Tilak Nagar here earlier this month. Stolen jewellery worth Rs.24 lakh and some cash have purportedly been recovered from them.

The police on May 15 received a complaint from 75-year-old Har Kaur alleging that jewellery and some cash kept in her house had been stolen. Her daughter-in-law Meetu Talwar, who used to have the keys to all the almirahs, was found missing. Meetu's mother Parvinder and brother Kamal Nain Singh, who works as a ticketing agent, were also missing from their house located in the neighbourhood. Suspecting their involvement, the police launched a hunt for them. Investigations revealed that the three suspects had been indulging in various financial deals in the past couple of years and that Meetu was under heavy debt. Acting on a tip-off that the suspects would gather at the Hari Nagar residence of her maternal aunt Jagminder's son-in-law Mehar, the police mounted a raid and arrested the accused persons, including Meetu's uncle Sukhbir. Gold and diamond jewellery besides some cash were purportedly recovered.

During interrogation, Meetu allegedly disclosed that she had first married Narender, who later died due to illness. She then married his younger brother, who works in London. Meetu had taken huge sums of money on interest for the treatment of her first husband, but she was unable to pay off the debts. She had also taken money from her aunt, who had been pestering her to return the amount.

It is alleged that Meetu eventually conspired with her mother and brother to steal the jewellery from her in-laws house to clear the debts. The accused had also mortgaged some ornaments.
